The Colour Purple

For an non-religious guy to open a book and read the first line "Dear God", I did not have high hopes for the Colour Purple. It seemed like a very tough read due to the colloquial language Walker uses through the protagonist Celie. Another hurdle that crossed my way as I flipped the first few pages was the graphic nature of the novel, as a personal lover of gore filled horror films, this book still gave me a couple goosebumps. However , as I continued my reading I quickly began to like the ideas around religion and spirituality which Walker expresses in the book. Some of the views regarding the universe are truly beautiful and by the end, the book makes sure you leave with your own conjured meaning for the colour purple. The book is a true masterpiece and was one of the biggest surprises I have experienced in literature. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone, it might be a tough read at first and may have a couple dull moments but by the end you may just leave the book feeling happy about your own existence in the universe.

Author: Alice Walker

  1. I'm not terribly religious either, but you can't go wrong with a classic such as this.
