What I played this week

Sly 2 : PS3

This weeks been a weird one, with exams and revision I either end up playing a game accidentally whilst trying to avoid revision, or I play an iPhone game in the library. Sly 2 is what I've really played properly this week, with the HD collection its looking surprisingly good. The thing I always remembered about the Sly games is the mission layout. The way each mission begins with the geeky thief Bentley describing a plan on a projector with scribbles, telling the whole heist and every persons job in it is very funny entertainment. It all comes around in the end because when you finally do the main heist you will remember Bentley's powerpoint-ish presentation and you will have fun with that your doing because you will know where every little piece is going into your master project. Also playing with the three thieves Sly, Murray and Bentley kept the game feeling fresh, especially now when I'm on my second play through which I don't always do for most games.

Retro Friday: The Gameboy Advance

The 21st century was not very kind to Nintendo, consoles such as the Playstation 2 and Xbox tried taking their thunder and to some extent took a lot. One thing Nintendo has still reigned king in however, are portable consoles and boy did the Gameboy Advance solidify that for Nintendo.

When a company released a portable back in the 90's - 2000's they always tried making a portable console which could replicate what the home consoles could do. This allowed heavy graphics and 3D environments on small displays but resulted in worse games as the gameplay almost felt like an afterthought. Most of the times the games just felt clunky and unnecessary on the devices, feeling crammed onto a smaller device. Whilst people at first ran to stores, buying their N-Gage's and looking at games like Tomb Raider on their portables, they soon noticed the crappy controls and realised that they could be playing a brilliant Tomb Raider game on their home consoles. This thought quickly travelled across people and took away any identity the other portables had, who remembers the flagship games on an N-Gage? Oh wait thats because most games on the N-Gage were either terrible or were poor ports of Playstation games. Nintendo had direction with the GBA they knew what type of games they wanted on the console and this helped them triumph. The GBA had its own identity seperate to the home consoles because it had its own unique games. Even though a lot of the time people looked at the GBA to get some nostalgic 2D sprite action, the GBA had its own library of games which oddly enough wouldn't have worked out on home consoles due to their intricate game design. Fit for short bursts, bright colours and satisfaction in minutes. The GBA has one of the best library of video games ever made. Also mentioning that the GBA was backwards compatible with the original Gameboy games only made the deal sweeter.

Going back to the point about direction, when the GBA launched, Nintendo wasn't messing around with its specs. The GBA boasted 32 bits, full colour with a battery life of over 14 hours, something I wish Nintendo would still do (3DS anyone). Nintendo knew what games they wanted on their systems, they knew that everything they had learnt from the NES and SNES era was to be translated into the GBA since the home consoles were not going to be using those games anymore. Nintendo knew that as Mario had to become 64 on their home console, their portable could still enjoy the 2D sprite fun of Super Mario World. This created a 'win win' situation because fans got both types of games and Nintendo was able to have more games to create. Everything learnt from the bit days was now coming back, Castlevania, Mario, Pokemon and so much more. This was the perfect time to be a fan of Nintendo, both the joys from the past and new ones from the future were present at once. Whenever games on the newly introduced 3D systems got too clunky all we had to do was turn the little beast on to play some Zelda!

Over time the GBA had an update to its hardware. People were tired of the lack of a front light, dark screen and overall clunky design. It was 2003 man and everyone was singing 'Seven Nation Army' while skateboarding down town. They didn't want a clunky piece of unattractive hardware sticking out their pockets. They complained and Nintendo listened, adapting to a laptop-like flip design, the Gameboy Advance SP was made.

"My favourite portable console to date"

This design was perfect, the GBA SP fits into your pocket perfectly, had a front lit screen giving a fine view on whatever your playing, fit well into your hands and had easy button accessibility. This was it, the Gameboy craze was back in black with the SP and carried till the DS. This console has perfect design, you really need to play it in order to feel how perfect it is.

Since I keep mentioning the series every time I look at retro games, Next week we will look at the NES & SNES days of Castlevania!

Retro Friday: Gameboy

Nintendo Gameboy.jpg
The Gameboy, a word holding nostalgic power for over a hundred million people. One of the most beloved pieces of electronic entertainment with a library of over a thousand brilliant games is one you are probably familiary with. If not, A brief history lesson is due so lets go back in the past to the glory days of 1989.

Imagine its the late 1980's and portable gaming consoles come out with one game installed into them. That game is the only game you can play and cartridges for those portable machines don't exist. Your stuck, your bored of the same dull game, not offering 8bit graphics like the impressive NES. Suddenly Nintendo shows a new console with 8Bit graphics, games like Mario, Pacman, Tetris and you do not need to buy different portable machines per game. This was a dream come true. The Gameboy blew up the portable gaming market with a thunderstorm. Most Gameboys being packaged with a copy of Tetris literally made children chew their finger nails off. Even adults on the train rides to work could not resist the strategic block twister Tetris was. Soon everyone started packing a Gameboy into their life, it was like the packed lunch you would take to primary school only difference being, this was one package everyone wanted a bite off.

"LEFT, RIGHT, UP, DOWN, A, B"

Although now people look at new devices and ask for all sorts of features, in 1989 that D pad and 6 buttons were all you needed. Look at the PS Vita that just came out in 2012, it has a directional pad, 6 buttons, two analogue sticks, touch screen, back touch pad and a motion sensor. Seriously people these days don't know how much they are getting in their devices compared to a couple decades back. Now the Gameboys controls do not hold it back, as the game designing legend miyamoto once explained "all you need are two simple things happening at once and you will have a challenge" the Gameboys games were some of the most engrossing adventures which could make you miss your bus stop if you weren't careful.

The GB at this point with its "hip" nickname had racked millions of sales breaking Nintendo's early predictions and had become the most demanded portable ever. Every new addition to the Gameboy family such as the Gameboy Colour were all welcome and were embraced by the same amount of popularity. Easily eliminating competition. Kids around the globe were dreaming the next new game which could have been announced for the system. The GB opened up a massive well of portable revenue and companies saw that, soon SEGA and ATARI were on Nintendo's back with their own portable consoles. Whilst the other companies had created stronger machines in hopes of taking down the GB, there was one reason why this portable beat all the rest... Metroid, Castlevania, The Legend of Zelda, Mega Man, Doctor Mario, Donkey Kong, Excite Bike and finally Pokemon. The GB's library of games was far superior to anyone else's out there and none could argue otherwise.

My personal childhood love was Pokemon, it is still one of my favourite games ever made and is not only loved by me because Pokemon Red/Blue are considered one of the highest selling RPG's of all time. They brought something special to the GB which other systems had hit upon but not fully started, the sociability. The Pokemon games made the link cable for the GB a must have as they allowed people to trade Pokemon, kids without the cable were unable to obtain all 150 Pokemon and so everyone I knew had already dragged their parents to the store to get one. The Pokemon slogan should have been, Gotta Catch Em' All? £14.99 please! All jokes aside, the cable was a great idea and was one of the better two player ideas of the 1990's, making boring classes and train rides a blast. Games like these really help in breaking the 'basement dweller' stereo type on gamers and so more power to Pokemon for that.

By the end of the 20th century, Nintendo had reigned supreme with the GB. A true masterpiece in video gaming history. People who had grown up with the system now were older, desired more than those 8Bit blocks from Nintendo. Even the 'Bit' era was now over on the home consoles as all the companies were now raging with their polygon machines, leaving nothing for the sprite lovers. But as the 21st century dawned and gamers started parting with their Gameboy memories did Nintendo bring out the next step, the next invention which would bring us all back to our first loves.. The Gameboy Advance.

Next Week we will look into the GBA and my personal favourite portable console of all time. the GameBoy Advance SP.

If you want a Gameboy, check em' out on Ebay as they are quite cheap and still offer a great time. However, be warned, you will need to buy some rechargeable batteries for these battery sucking beasts.

Disclaimer:
Controversy is present here as the Microvision is technically the first interchangeable cartridge system but it was not well designed and supported, meeting its death only two years after launch. It was only the Gameboy which made the portable market what it is and so that is why I am considering it as the first main portable interchangeable gaming machine.

Rayman Origins Review

Sonic and Mario need to watch out because Rayman is back!

Lets begin with the first thing you notice when you open the game, the graphics. Rayman boasts hand drawn graphics with a very unique art style which is the best I have ever seen in a platformer. Without hesitation I can call Rayman the best looking platformer I have ever played and many times it will make you freeze, staring at the screen. The vibrant colours feel as if they are coming out of your tv, especially on the later levels with the fast paced chases will you marvel at the colour palettes used in the game.

The amount of creativity in RO will overwhelm you, as you play this beauty prepare to see weird things such as giant toothpaste packets which shoot fire at stoves to cook thunderstorms, can't visualise that? I couldn't either till I saw it and used it in the game to progress. What I truly love about RO is how diverse each world is, everytime you enter a new world in RO you will feel a massive difference from the previous world as everything in the environment drastically changes. This change is not only pleasant to the eyes but is also a pleasure to play as each world has different types of plat-forming challenges, example, in the grassy world you will come across a lot of hillside jumps, water slides avoiding spikes but in the gourmand world you will be jumping on cheese, avoiding flaming toothpaste and jumping on top of sausages to avoid the deathly forks. Yes the change is extremely polar opposite.

A game is nothing without its controls and that's fortunate for RO as its controls hold much fluidity. Similar to the general plat-former you will be running and jumping but thats not it. In RO you will gain new powers as you traverse the worlds, the powers will make the game feel fresh as you will not be getting bored of doing the same thing over and over again. Other than the platforming levels RO almost boasts 2D shooting and flying levels which are  Not many paltformers can make an enjoyable 2-4 player experience without becoming too chaotic and headache inducing, however don't be worried as RO runs well with 4 players playing together and can surely conjure some laughter. One gripe and my only gripe with RO is the lack of online multiplayer as the game is fully offline and I believe that it is one area where Ubisoft could have lost potential.

The music is very important for a game, from Skyrim's orchestral soundtrack which pits you into a fantasy world to Mario's upbeat music which you will be humming years down the line, a gamer will always appreciate the music in the game. RO not only has some of the weirdest music I have ever heard in a game but it also has some of the most funny, catchy and cute music I have ever heard. The soundtrack knows how to put a smile on your face, the ukulele is nicely played, the random singing in a made up language never gets old and the chef's singing in the gourmand levels will be the newest melody you will be singing in the shower.

RO is roughly 6-7 hours long if you rush through it and although it may seem short, trust me, this is a game which will encourage you to do all the extra challenges, speed trophies and what nots. Where games like Uncharted 3 and Sonic generations could not grab my attention into doing their 'extras' for trophies, I'm sure ill be going back to RO soon. With extra challenges, levels which you unlock through collecting all the little plectoons and speed trophies, you can easily spend around 15+ hours in RO.

After playing Rayman Origins and completing it, I was in the middle of writing this review. However due to a couple complications I was unable to write this review for a week in which time I completed both Super Mario Bros 3 and Sonic generations. After completing them when I came back to the review for Rayman, I realised how amazing this game is, it has the diversity in controls sonic would die for and the graphics mario would salivate over. Rayman Origins is head and shoulders with its competition and in some cases is even better than the platformers out there, I'm speaking of you Sonic. This is a masterpiece in game design, art style and fun factor. I recommend it to everyone out there form 6 year old kids to 60 year old crack addicts, ofcourse don't put a kid and a crack addict in the same room. I give Rayman Origins a 9.5 out of 10.

Asura's Wrath Demo Impressions

When a legendary company like Capcom states they are making a new IP, it has to send atleast a little bit of excitement your way...

The latest IP by Capcom is Asura's Wrath, little of its story is known but what I saw so far was interesting. AW's cutscenes were fairly enjoyable, very anime-ish and were integrated well into the combat. Speaking of combat, it was not enjoyable. AW's combat works on you fighting in a 'hack & slash' form for a few minutes before being interrupted by a cutscene which is immediately followed by a monotonous shooting gameplay mechanic. Shooting you ask, shooting is basic, you hold square and scroll over stuff to shoot. Very basic and extremely boring after the first few minutes. After the 'hack/slash' & shooting mechanics, the third and final gameplay mechanic is a 'quick time button event driven' custscene. That long word means, you press buttons in the middle of custscenes to make Asura do things such as punch a God. As exciting as punching a God sounds, its boring.

The games main problem is that none of the gameplay mechanics are fully refined, every gameplay mechanic is weak and the game knows it. Every time you feel as if you are finally starting to play a game, the game will stop you and make you watch a custscene. I am not exaggerating, the game distracts you atleast every 3 minutes and 3 minutes is too f*ing early! It is so annoying for the game to pull you out of a mechanic every 3 minutes. It feels as if the game is holding you with a leash and is constantly pulling you through it. It is boring frustration at its best. The demo featured an interesting story which I wanted to know more about, but the gameplay bored me to tears. With a demo lasting only 30 minutes which still manages to bore you, I am worried for this game as I couldn't even imagine myself playing the whole game for 6+ hours.

I hope the demo for AW does not represent the full game as the game really looks interesting. I would love to have a fun game around the story and world Capcom have created. Also fighting Gods which are larger than Earth just sounds so cool, I want to see it done well. C'mon Capcom, you can do it, just don't mess this up!

Bethesda needs to make up to the PS3 gamers

Skyrim, I wish I could sit here and tell you how much I love the game, but I can't do that because I haven't been able to play it yet. After waiting over 2 years for this game, all I can do is sit and hear other people speak of their great play through's. Bethesda has given us PS3 players a version of Skyrim that runs on a pathetic frame rate around 20 hours into the game and becomes unplayable after around 60 hours of gameplay into the game. For a game thats supposed to be a large adventure full of hundreds of hours, its clear that PS3 gamers have been treated like sh*t.

Games coming with bugs only apparent on the PS3 version is nothing new to the gaming world. It is understandable too as the PS3 version is, in most cases, a port of the Xbox or PC copy. Skyrim stretches this line more than any game before it as the PS3 version of the game becomes unplayable after a certain point! For a game as complex as the Elder Scrolls V we can still understand and give Bethesda the benefit of the doubt that they were unable to build such a complex game without problems on the PS3. However, the new patch (v1.3) that was just released on PC and is making its way to the consoles, does not fix the PS3 lag. Why the hell would Bethesda make creation tools and extra features for pc and xbox gamers while the PS3 version does not even function properly yet! This clearly shows Bethesda's priorities with the consoles and shows their lack of care for the PS3 gamers. This pathetic handling that Bethesda has shown to us speaks in large magnitudes. Just the fact that the PS3 version of the game was not even sent to reviewers on time, speaks a lot about the way Bethesda treats its loyal customers, Bethesda hid all the buggy shit under the carpet and sold it to us. Our loyalty to their products has been shown no respect and to make up for this bitter slap, a consolation is due for us playstation players. I believe that Bethesday should:

#1 Build a patch which fixes the PS3 lag and send it to us soon! and in the meantime atleast provide us information on the patch and its release date.

Thats me when I read that patch v1.3 was not even going to fix the PS3 lag

#2 After the patch's release give us PS3 gamers something special, a gift for our patience with this pathetic serving Bethesda has dished up. Bethesda should do something like "half price on first two DLC's on PS3" or something of a similar sort. If Bethesda does do that (they won't cause they hate PS3), it would make up for the slap we have been given on our naked faces.

Right now as a PS3 gamer I feel as if the right translation for 'Fus ro dah' from Bethesda has been 'Go F*ck your self'

iPhone games of the week

Batman Arkham City Lockdown (£3.99/$5.99)

Batman Arkham City Lockdown has recently been released for a hefty price of £3.99/$5.99. The game is fun with some RPG elements thrown in and the combat is easy to use, reminiscent of Infinity Blades combat. However the repetitiveness of the missions and combat does wear on you after a few fights. The game is not a good buy at this price for even the biggest Bat lovers.

Infinity Blade II (£4.99/$9.99)

This is as close as it gets to console like gaming on the iOS devices. Infinity Blade II is fun and a nice substantial upgrade from the previous game but its just too similar to the first game. After a couple hours into the first Infinity Blade, I was getting a little tired of it and since the second game is more of the same, its not worth the admission price. Wait for a discount if you already have Infinity Blade 1. However if you don't have either or you just love this series too much, you might just instantly fall in love with the game, its new additions in weapons, enemies, hilariously bad story (thats a positive!) and similar but amazing gameplay. One last tid bit, be careful and make some space in your device, this application is almost a gigabyte big!

Sonic and Sega all stars racing (£0.69/$0.99) [Discount]

One of the best Kart racers on the iPhone is discounted for a small amount of time, so pick it up! Its a good game with some sloppy aspects but overall overshadows its downfalls with fun and addictive gameplay, reminds me of a very dummed down mario kart which is not a bad thing for the iPhone. Heck, some of the tracks of the game are even as good as its moustached competition. Way worth the price here and should not be missed.

Grand Theft Auto 3 (£2.99/$4.99)

The fairly recent addition to the app store has been quite infamous if I may say so, as you walk around, steal cars and kill people in one of the most influential open world games ever made, you will be amazed by the size of the world and the quantity of missions to perform. However, performing the missions might not be really fun as the games touch controls are a bit sloppy and the harder missions might make you bleed with frustration. iPad users might have an easier time playing this due to the larger screen. The game is amazing and either you want this for nostalgia, or think it just looks cool, will serve up some great fun. There is a slight chance that you might be too frustrated by its controls but for a low price like this, is a chance I recommend taking anyways. One last tid bit, be careful and make some space in your device, this application is almost a gigabyte big!

inFamous Festival of Blood Review

An inFamous game on the ps store, awesome.

I like this game, there you go, no suspense, no paragraphs for you to read through to find the answer. Now heres a little something to explain why I like this game and why you should too!

inFamous Festival of Blood does not take itself seriously and thats a good thing, the game uses this heavily in its story which is quite comedic and entertaining; turns out to be more entertaining than the inFamous 1 & 2 stories. The gameplay is just like inFamous 2 but has a couple tweeks which add some vampire powers. These powers are bloody brilliant (pun intended). After playing Festival of Blood I wish I could use the bat flying power in inFamous 2, it is so fun and is exactly the type of power 'Cole' needed to give the game a fresh feel again.

The graphics are just like the previous installments in the franchise which is great as the inFamous franchise has stellar quality. Next to that Festival of blood boasts an amazing art style with the neon lights, the dark red sky and the gothic look on some scenery & people. This truly brings back the feel of old horror movies like 'the lost boys' and even slasher movies like 'A nightmare on elm street'. As a fan of horror, I was delighted as I flew, yes flew with bat powers, to the top of the tallest building and glared at the beautiful sight of the city at night.

The game adds a playstation move feature and honestly, it works really well! Of course it does not work as well as the dual shock 3 but I am sure it will be a fun add on which will run you for atleast an hour before getting boring. An hour may not sound like a lot but if you put it into context here in this small psn game, it means a lot.

The whole game being a small adventure may put some people off as it is only 1 and a half hours long if you do not do any of the side quests. This should not be a complain for a game that is £8/$10 though, if you compare 1 and a half hours of single story content with full retail games of today, you can see that festival of blood boats a good amount of play time. Other than the main story I spent around 3 hours in this game, playing user created missions, collected blood vials and just roaming this beauty Sucker Punch have created.

inFamous Festival of Blood is an amazing psn game and should definitely bought, especially when its on sales (like it is now for the 2011 christmas to late January sale)

I give inFamous Festival of Blood 9 and a half vampire teeth out of 10

9.5/10

Crysis 2 Review

A perfect example of why gameplay is always more important than graphics in the development of video games..

Nintendo, everytime you make a new mario game and its looked down upon due to the low 480p resolution, just look at Crysis 2 and be proud. Crysis 2, where do I begin? The game is more upsetting because I see potential in there but I also see it mauled down and thrown out the window.

Crysis 2 begins with an ugly interface, and sure you may say that I'm 'Knitpicking' here but it is a real turn off when the menu looks ugly while your trying to go through it. Speaking of the menu, the soundtrack of the game is horrendous, its the most generic action music you have always already heard. In the menu, the music is a 6 second loop that replays itself, this is not the NES or Atari 5200, even back then we had longer songs in menu's, c'mon EA and Crytek.

After crossing the ugly interface, you will enjoy the games beautiful graphics. Everything in Crysis 2 feels more vibrant and photo realistic than most other games. However, the artists could have taken some time on to work on the character designs as some of them are bland and repetitively used.

Crysis 2's gameplay is not bad, it is actually quite fun to control, satisfactory and provides good response. It is just that, after having a good gameplay mechanic, Crytek made the most un inspiring game around that gameplay mechanic. The repetitive missions will have you fall asleep as enemies just come in wave after wave to be killed. Sure the game tries new things every now and then by allowing you to choose stealth, armour or strength (something like that) powers, you are disabled from using the powers in a more creatively fun manner due to the games AI system and level design. The games AI system and level design does not allow you to fully use those powers and options. Speaking of AI and level design, the AI is dull, sometimes enemies can see you if you make the slightest movement whereas at other times they are completely blind and you can perform numerous manoeuvres without being seen. The level design is appalling, it is extremely lazy as you walk through on corridor or hall to another shooting enemies that come in either a group or in multiple scattered forms.

The story of Crysis 2 is the worst story I have experienced this year, and also one of the most annoying story's ever made. The game makes you care less about it by throwing generic plot lines towards you. In the game you will not care about anyone, especially your own character, the protagonist, as he is constantly silent, has no personality and takes orders from others constantly. Speaking of orders, during the whole game you follow a persons voice as they give you basic instructions such as "go there, kill that, get that". This gets so F*ing annoying in the first hour, yet the game stretches it for 10 hours. For a man who has a suit with the power to save the world from aliens, why the hell does he have to constantly take orders from other people whose role is not fully explained. Maybe the characters roles are explained but as I played through the game, I was so bored that I could not grasp any bit of information from the 'already done' call of duty inspired loading screen movies. By the end of Crysis 2, I was so happy to see the credits and thats a sign of a bad game as I wanted to finish this game as fast as possible for all the wrong reasons.

The multiplayer in Crysis 2 is the standard first person shooter modern warfare-esk multiplayer. You earn xp to get unlocks, a complain here is that a lot of the unlocks are seriously useless and do not tempt you into 'earning' them. The maps get painfully boring extremely quickly, the game modes are the standard ones you can get anywhere else, with the exception of one which is quite enjoyable. Conclusively, Crysis 2's multiplayer ends up becoming a distraction which would only work for a couple hours. That is, if it ever works, the games multiplayer community is almost dead and finding a game is getting harder and rarer by the minute.

I cared about Crysis 2, I was looking forward to it but this has been the most disappointing game of 2011. The technical aspects of the game are beautiful and sometimes you might catch a glimmer of beauty, but it will only last for a second as it is overshadowed by the bland created of everything else on top of it. Crytek and the Crysis series needs some creativity, this new entry is pathetic. It showcases an attempt of them trying to grasp some of the 'Call of duty' market and for a series like this, Crysis deserves more respect and should get a substantial instalment, not an attempt at capturing another games audience by altering the original material. Even putting that aside, Crysis 2 has such a massive lack of originality that it will put you to sleep even with the sound of the gunfire going off everywhere.

I Give Crysis 2, 4 super power suits out of 10

Finally Superman has a good game

The man of steel has always had bad games, even when his movies were great, his games just lacked the sense of action and power he had. I will not be fully negative, in the SEGA genesis days Superman had some amazing games like the Bioware game for Superman. However after that the games have went downhill for such a pro longed amount of time that Superman has lost his excitement in the Video game medium.

Till now... *dan dan dan

A new app simply called Superman was just released on the app store by a company called Chillingo, who are the brilliant makers of the Cut the Rope games. I highly recommend this Superman game as it is extremely cheap and is truly the best man of steel game since the old genesis game. Even if you don't like it a lot, atleast it will be better than Superman 64 ;)

Uncharted 3 Review

The sequel to 2009's game of the year and the new entry into Sony's most valuable franchise is here. Uncharted 3 is riding on a mountain of expectations from everyone, including me so here's the question.. Does Uncharted 3 live up to the expectations?

From the get go, you can see a change in Uncharted 3 in visual terms, it's a mystery how Naughty Dog did it but U3 is a better looking game than U2. A lot of games try super realism in their graphics to look beautiful, Uncharted, although has beautifully realistic graphics, uses a very vibrant and unique art style which brings everything in the universe to life. Animations have went through quite a substantial change from U2, Drake is even more interactive this time around as he randomly does animations as your walking around the area. Some examples are the way he puts his hand up next to a wall as you walk by it and the way in which he stumbles automatically as you run across bumpy grounds. These animations are a nice addition but can look a little stale at times as Drake just randomly puts his hand on walls when your not even walking in their direction, his hand just twists and touches the wall behind your back. The snow in U2 was impressive and this time around, snow is replaced by sand, you will stare in awe at the screen as sand will fall onto Drakes clothes and get stuck in his hair. Its a true work of art.

The gameplay has went through even a bigger change than the animation. The way you shoot is more.. wavy, as the shooting mechanics do not have any aim assist in the campaign whereas U2 had aim assist in the campaign. The weapons also give more kickback and that adds to the 'wavy-ness', I like this new addition but it was a pain to get used to at first. The reticule now opens up when you shoot with weapons, this makes it harder to shoot enemies and makes 20m distanced headshots almost impossible, which were always easy to pull in U2.The problem here is that Naughty Dogs addition to gameplay are both welcome and annoying as the moments in gameplay, where you like and dislike the new additions are equally present. However, the new hand to hand combat is brilliant and reminds of the combat from other games like Batman Arkham City. The hand to hand combat is excessively emphasised as there are a lot of scenes where using your fists becomes the only option. While in combat, Drake automatically uses his environment and that creates a fun environment as you smash shisha pipes into dudes heads. Overall gameplays good with new additions, its still the best 3rd person action gameplay I have ever played, however the new additions are not fully welcomed as they are a hit and miss.

The story this time around is great but leaves a bad taste in your mouth as the latter part of the game just doesn't live up to expectations. The travel into Drakes origin and the exploration of Sully as a father figure is brilliant. There are some moments in the game where I was so emotionally touched that I was feeling emotional pressure as I awaited the result of the action. The game brings a new and old characters back, the new characters are this english dude, the english villain and Salim. The english dude [ I won't tell you how you meet him or it'd be a spoiler ] is hilarious. He is extremely interesting and if you live in London, he does crack a couple english jokes you will get. Salim is also an interesting add, I love his expressions and his voice as they add tension to the situation in which Drake meets him. The villain this time around is also a nice addition and is not just a two dimensional 'baddy'.The characters from U2 were brilliant and so in U3 you would want to see all of them back together, this is something that doesn't completely happen. In U3 characters like Chloe just disappear without a lot of explanation and the whole gang never gets together. This leaves an empty feeling. U3 opens questions and never answers them, from the first time you meet Eleana to the last there is a romantic tone revolving something (I won't say), you never find out what exactly happened to get to the point. For characters which I care about, this is annoying and only frustrates when I ask myself why this game didn't tell us that. One gripe, this is a big one for me, in Uncharted 2's campaign you could buy things such as 'Zero gravity for objects', 'Fat Drake', 'Sepiatone colour mode' and any weapon you want for use in the campaign, these bonuses were a blast to play. I absolutely loved playing as Fat Drake in the campaign, equipping him with random weaponry such as the tranquilizer gun. These bonuses have been taken out of Uncharted 3 and I am absolutely bitter about it. Seriously, bad move Naughty Dog.

The multiplayer this time around is a big focus for the game. You can notice this from the first instance you load the game and see the menu. This multiplayer is amazing, I absolutely love it and prefer it over other multiplayers such as call of duty and gears of war. The customization of characters is a great addition, using money you earn to buy things is fun, the maps are freakin' cool (especially the runway one), co op is really really well done and as a whole, multiplayer keeps you engaged for countless hours after you have completed the brilliant story. There is one gripe, in multiplayer you are allowed to take a basic template of an ugly villain/hero and dress him up, I have no idea why Naughty Dog didn't add the option for us to be able to dress Drake/Sully and our other favourites. Little options like wearing sun glasses are present but there is no option to dress our heroes any further than that. This is extremely stupid, Naughty Dog shouldn't have missed that and I'm quite mad about that. Lets get a little positive, the new medal system is nice where you have to earn certain medals to get a treasure, which in the long run, unlocks clothes for your hero, even though there should have been more options. To sum it up, multiplayer is fantastic but for an Uncharted game it is not my primary reason of purchase. I purchase Uncharted because its story is one of the best in the industry and to see the series lose some of its story magic to make its multiplayer better saddens me.

Uncharted 3 sticks between a rock and a hard place. Naughty Dog has brought a wave of new additions but with every addition there was a negative aspect. Do make sure you understand that I am being picky here as  Uncharted is one of those franchises which requires a  fully detailed analysis due to its high quality. Overall U3 is not as good as U2 in story but is better in the rest of the features, the story is one of the strongest points of the Uncharted series as it is the stand alone thing which boosted the series to the top of the mountain and so the weaker story makes a massive impact on Uncharted 3's overall quality here. Also next to that, a couple bad decisions and choices do stand out when you compare Uncharted 3 to its predecessor. These disappointing changes and barely satisfying changes are ones which affect this games overall presentation. As amazing as this game is, I would be lying if I gave it a perfect score. For many of you, this game will be better than U2 but for me personally, the weaker story is more than enough to disappoint me.

I give Uncharted 3 , 9 and a half Subway sandwiches out of 10

9.5/10

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Review

Uncharted 2, how I love thee, how thai majesty blew my f*ing mind into a happy melancholy. Okay, I'm not gonna talk like this for the rest of the review. Uncharted 3 is almost upon us (and some might already have it!), so lets begin this review of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

If Indiana Jones played video games, he would have gotten a platinum trophy on this one. Uncharted no longer bears the criticism of being a Tomb Raider/Indiana Jones wannabe, it is the game which almost single handedly defines the 3rd person shooter genre at this point. No game which is involves 3rd person shooting can now come out and not be compared or mentioned with Uncharted. This series has escalated itself to the top of the mountain with this game.

Uncharted 2 begins on Drake waking up on a train while its hanging from the ledge of a mountain. Not many games begin at such a high peak (pun intended), heck, not many games even reach such a high point during the course of their whole campaign. The games story should be thought as a hollywood action movie in a video game where you actually care about the characters and the story (tell that to Michael Bay). The characters come back and we love them more than ever as we get to understand them better. New entrances in the character line up like Chloe are very welcome as they'r entertaining and fun to see grow throughout the campaign. The games story is quite unpredictable and comparing this to any other game out there right now.. This games story will surprise you and make you fall in love with it. Lastly, due to the story taking place in so many contrasting situations  like the snowy mountians of Tibet to the humid streets of Nepal, the game will keep itself fresh with new locations and so will be consistently entertaining.

The graphics are beautiful, I actually cannot believe how Naughty Dog upped themselves from U1 by such a large margin. U2 is head and shoulders above U1 and the graphical change can be noticed from the first instance you look at the screen. Its like falling in love in High School, only this time, the outcome won't be you realising she was a deceitful.. wait, oh yeah Uncharted 2.

The animations are smooth, even Micheal Jackson would look at this and think of remixing his smooth criminal song. As Drake walks around and automatically puts his arm on his stomach because hes been shot there, as he semi crouches while running uphill and constantly blocks his face in the snow storms.. You will be amazed at the tremendous realism that Drake acts upon. Every turn in the game, Drake will bring a new animation and increase the immersion by a considerable amount. Also, remember the dynamic water from the first game? In this game apart from the water, snow also attaches to your clothing and characters. Rolling into cover will drop snow on your hair which will slowly fall off. This new feature is so well done I actually walked around and jumped randomly into the snow to play with it! The games sound is superb. The theme is done very well and is quite memorable, making you hum it when your trying to concentrate on a test. It does that.

The gameplay is back, and this time I cannot think of anything really negative about the gameplay. The controls can feel a little stiff at times with shooting as it is a bit too easy to aim headshots across the map but thats not a big negative. If your going to knit pick there I gave a little negative, if your not going to knit pick then the gameplay is done perfectly and controls like a dream. Gone are the annoying motion controls, the constant weird control deaths (you only have em a tiny bit here) and gone are the annoying times you jump and don't start climbing something. This games gameplay is so well done it might make first person shooter fans start to consider the 3rd person shooting genre as one of their favourites.

Drakes Journal is back and this time around the puzzles are more fun to do as they are more engaging. Some of the puzzles even take a massive amount of time to solve as they are so large, you have to literally climb them to get around them.

A new multiplayer component has been added and its quite good, its fun to play, there are a considerable amount of fun maps and that will keep you engaged for a little while. The game gives you money which is like xp, when you level up you can purchase the unlockes you have unlocked, the unlockables for multiplayer are a great addition as they add variety and some of the skins in multiplayer are hilarious. Other than that the multiplayer can get stale after a long period of time and can also sometimes take too long to find a match. Also a new co op feature has been added and it is a blast to play, especially if you get friends on it. The co op ranges from different missions, some more linear, some more arena-like, the games co op also has different levels of difficulty and is challenging on the hard difficulties so make sure you have skilled friends!

Some criticisms here, the games enemies can get annoying as they are not very varied in terms of visual appearance. This is tiring as I get tired of killing the same trampy pirate 10 times, but hey killing trampy pirates is fun so its not too bad. The game also has a disapointing boss fight, the rest of the game was so high standard that as I approached the final boss fight, my expectations were seriously high and the boss seriously sucked. Also the super natural aspect in the game sucked badly as I hated the blue people that came up, they really didn't do anything special and had no more originality than the crappy fat guards you fight.

Uncharted 2 is the only game in which you will put the controller down because you will think that the games playing a cut scene, only to pick your controller back up immediately. The game builds moments which I have never seen in a video game and the game makes you play through those scenes. Most of the time, the coolest scenes in Video games are  ones we watch and never play. U2 never does that and its set pieces are so large in scope that not many games can even create a CG video to reach that standard.

Uncharted 2 is one of the best games ever made. This game is why I love video games, it builds an atmosphere, a universe, creates characters, a story we fall into, combines with brilliant gameplay, has a ton of memorable moments and more goodies for us to keep coming back. This is one of the only games I keep constantly popping into my PS3 to play certain levels as this game truly embeds itself into your little gamer heart.

I give Uncharted 2: Among Thieves 10 Train-wrecks out of 10

10/10

Uncharted: Drakes Fortune Review

Before the review

Jak and Daxter, check it out on PS2 :D
Uncharted 3 is one of the most anticipated games coming this year and for me personally, is one I'm dying to play. The ability of the Uncharted series in providing a cinematic, movie-like experience is un-paralleled and this has made the series one of the biggest new IP's of this generation. Lets go back to the time when the PS3 had just came out and Naughty Dog (the company who makes Uncharted) was now making their first new IP since Jak and Daxter.

Uncharted: Drakes Fortune began on a bit of a scary ground with everyone thinking 'tomb raider and Indiana Jones' immediately as they saw the game. The game had a bit of an up hill battle due to that criticism and with sheer quality alone defeated the criticism (or did it?).

The game has an interesting story which does actually make you care about characters. The story although is a little clichéd still makes you care for it due to the characters and voice acting of the game. The game really makes you love the characters as if they were characters from a TV show you watch consistently, which is an extremely tough thing to do and so Naughty Dog should be commended for this achievement.

Ahh sully, you player :)
The character of Drake is very interesting, he's funny, witty, smart, makes the right decisions at the right times and has a way with women which makes us all chuckle. Other characters such as Victor Sullivan are brilliantly executed and make you really like the chemistry between the characters. This is a game which will make you soak into your seat and await the next witty comment about what you just experienced as you will want to hear what the characters have to say about your actions ... yeah the game makes you care that much about the characters.

The graphics are beautiful, with vibrant leaves reflecting glowing sunlight under the shadows of the trees. The water is super realistic and is a delight to walk and swim into as it actually wets your clothes (now thats cool!).  Next to the graphics being freakin' beautiful, the animations are amazing as Drake is super realistic and has a massive batch of animations which keep surprising you as your ducking into cover constantly in different ways.

What's a game without good game play? Uncharted's game play is really fun as it nails the 3rd person shooter game play and makes other games like 'tomb raider' and 'resident evil 5' look primitive in gameplay comparison. The game is super smooth to control as you jump, climb, shoot, duck, throw grenades and do all at once while remaining control of the action at the same time.

The plat forming is fun but it can get boring at times when it starts getting repetitive, however whenever that happens, Drake throws in a line or two and makes the climb entertaining. The game is quite unoriginal as it doesn't do a lot of new things but what it does, it does brilliantly which makes us enjoy this game much more than the other games it might have taken inspiration from.Other than that, some controls like throwing grenades are extremely 'wonky' and the motion sensor controls suck quite a lot. You can turn them off after your done trying them once and boasting about your motion technology (yeah you would boast about motion if it was 2007).

The game play although fun, does get repetitive in Uncharted till your almost near the end where the game throws a massive turn on you and changes everything. That change is very surprising and is very welcome. The puzzles are fun to do and are cool to get through at-least once due to a clever use of Drakes journal.

Uncharted is not full of fresh new ideas but it does its deal brilliantly. It's an 8-9 hour long game with alright amounts of replay value due to some collectibles and videos (no online), some may consider that short and I don't really disagree but at the end of the day, this is one game that will bring you back to it constantly due to its quality.

Oh one last tid bit, the game is extremely cheap now.. especially in Sony's Uncharted 1 & 2 packs so .. Buy this game.

I give Uncharted Drakes Fortune 8 Historic Journals out of 10
